The Nativity Sermon of St. John Chrysostom

My ears resound to the Shepherd’s song, piping no soft melody, but chanting full forth a heavenly hymn. The Angels sing. The Archangels blend their voice in harmony. The Cherubim hymn their joyful praise. The Seraphim exalt His glory. All join to praise this holy feast, beholding the Godhead here on earth, and man in heaven. He Who is above, now for our redemption dwells here below; and he that was lowly is by divine mercy raised.

CANDLEMAS DAY

The Feast of the Presentation, often called Candlemas, commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the presentation of Christ in the temple, which took place 40 days after his birth as Jewish law required. According to Mosaic law, a mother who had given birth to a boy was considered unclean for seven days. Continue reading

The Feast of the Three Hierarchs and Ecumenical Teachers

On the 30th of the month, we celebrate the joint Memory of our THREE Holy Fathers and DOCTORS of the Universe: BASIL the GREAT, GREGORY the THEOLOGIAN and JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

During the reign of the Emperor Alexius Comnenus (1081-1118), a controversy arose in Constantinople among men learned in the Faith and zealous for virtue about the three holy Hierarchs and Fathers of the Church, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. Some argued for Saint Basil above the other two because he was able, as none other, to explain the mysteries of the Faith, and rose to angelic rank by his virtues. Organizer of monastic life, leader of the entire Church in the struggle with heresy, austere and demanding shepherd as to Christian morals, in him there was nothing base or of the earth. Hence, said they, he was superior to Saint Chrysostom who was by nature more easily inclined to absolve sinners.

Synaxis of the Archangel Michael and the Other Bodiless Powers

The Synaxis of the Chief of the Heavenly Hosts, Archangel Michael and the Other Heavenly Bodiless Powers: Archangels Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Jehudiel, Barachiel, and Jeremiel was established at the beginning of the fourth century at the Council of Laodicea, which met several years before the First Ecumenical Council. The 35th Canon of the Council of Laodicea condemned and denounced as heretical the worship of angels as gods and rulers of the world, but affirmed their proper veneration.

Orthodox Prayer Book Project

We are considering a print project – The Orthodox Prayer Book – Euchologion (Russian – Православный молитвослов на английском языке).

There are some nice prayer books published and available, but we’d like something that would be:

  • More affordable (the referenced examples feature price tags of around $20 a piece – rather unwelcoming thing in Eastern Europe)
  • Easily available locally (slow overseas shipments are, of course, good for practicing humility, but anyway…)
  • Tailored to local peculiarities – like having a Slavic or Russian translation side-by-side (good for locals learning to pray in English and for foreign visitors learning to pray in Russian or Slavic).

The base for this new book is likely to be an already published book.

Give us your suggestions – what should we be taking into account while preparing this print issue.
Specifically, please tell us what do you think of:

  • Which book should we take as a base?
  • Which language should be used – old English (like in KJV Bible), modern American (or British) English (like in NKJV Bible)?
  • Which translation to include – Russian or Slavonic?
  • Any other advice?

Thanks!
